Gardaí is making some changes to its surveillance of Covid-19 regulations as the country moves from Level 5 to Level 3 starting tomorrow.

Fixed checkpoints on highway / expressway routes will no longer be in place, a statement confirmed.

Operation Fanacht will continue to see more than 100 checkpoints on major routes supported by a mobile checkpoint program.

These will be held on a daily basis with a focus on adhering to inter-county travel guidelines. People are asked not to travel outside of their county before December 18.

Gardaí said its ongoing operation will also include:
– High visibility patrols in key city, urban and retail locations in the lead up to Christmas. There will also be patrols focused on the nighttime economy. In this sense, An Garda Síochána will keep in close contact with retail and authorized establishments.
– Checks at authorized facilities under Operation Navigation will increase again.
– Community engagement activity will continue to focus on the vulnerable and those who feel isolated, particularly during the Christmas season.
– Active investigation of domestic abuse continued, as well as support for victims under Operation Faoiseamh.

Speaking today, Commissioner Drew Harris said: “Throughout the pandemic, health advice and regulations have been followed very well by the public. It is critical that this continues at Level 3.

“While people can get more activities and travel more starting on December 1, we must all remember that Covid-19 is still with us and we must act accordingly.

“We must all continue to play our role in heeding public health advice. This is the best way to protect ourselves, our loved ones and neighbors.”
