Gardaí seeks to establish whether a man who died earlier this year was the victim of an assault in the hours prior to his transfer to the hospital.

John Hannigan (48) was discovered in the hallway of his apartment complex on Grosvenor Road, Rathmines, south of Dublin at approximately 6 p.m. on January 3.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and took Mr. Hannigan to St James Hospital, where he was treated for several weeks before dying on February 20.

It was not immediately obvious what injuries Hannigan had sustained in early January.

The Gardaí investigating the unexplained death is trying to establish whether Mr. Hannigan was involved in an altercation or was the target of an attack, which could have contributed to his death.

The Gardaí has not released the results of a post-mortem examination of his body for “operational reasons,” a Garda spokeswoman said.

However, it is understood that the autopsy findings led Gardaí to investigate whether he had suffered injuries from an assault in the hours prior to his transfer to the hospital.

“Investigating Gardaí has not been able to determine that the sole cause of John’s death was due to natural or accidental circumstances and continue to investigate all the circumstances of this inexplicable death,” said the spokeswoman.

Gardaí established that Mr. Hannigan briefly visited the family in Balally, Sandyford, south of Dublin at 1:30 pm on January 3.

“Unfortunately, gardaí has been unable to identify witnesses who may be in a position to provide an account of Mr. Hannigan’s movements between the time he left this area until he was discovered in his apartment complex that same day at 6 pm” the spokeswoman said.

Gardaí seeks to speak to witnesses or people who have information about the man’s movements on January 3.

Anyone with information should contact the Rathmines Garda station on 01666 6700, or the confidential Garda line at 1800 666111.

Hannigan is survived by her parents Paul and Ann, and her brother Brian.
