Gardai rushed to the scene when a car hit the water on an icy road Sunday morning.

The incident occurred on the Tyrrell’s Lane canal in Edenderry, Co Offaly.

Officials confirmed that no one was injured, but issued a warning about dangerous conditions as the country was covered in fog and ice on Sunday.

A Met Eireann Status Yellow weather alert for “dense fog” is currently in effect, and will remain in effect until 10 am Monday.

A Garda spokesperson said: “Tullamore Gardaí and Offaly Fire Service attended a scene where a vehicle entered the canal at Tyrells Lane, Edenderry. There are no injuries.

“Driving conditions have been dangerous overnight and early this morning with heavy fog and ice.”

AA Engine Experts offer the following tips for driving in foggy conditions:

  • Use your low beams at all times, in addition to your windshield wipers and fog.
  • Familiarize yourself with the front and rear fog lights. Know how to turn them on and off and use them only when appropriate.
  • Beware of other drivers not using headlights.
  • Only drive as fast as conditions allow and keep a greater distance between yourself and the car ahead. Following someone’s taillights can give a false sense of security and is dangerous.
  • If the road has street lights on, you probably don’t need to use your fog lights.
  • Be able to stop within your range of visibility. This is particularly important on highways and expressways, where you will be traveling at high speed.
