Gardai investigates fatal drowning incident off Cork coast

Gardaí is investigating a fatal drowning incident that claimed the life of a man in his fifties this Friday afternoon.

Around 4 p.m. today, the Youghal RNLI volunteer team responded to reports of a missing swimmer in the Calyso Bay area of ​​Ardmore.

The man is believed to have struggled while swimming with friends.

Upon arriving at the scene, a crew member quickly spotted the victim in the water, and the man was taken aboard the lifeboat where CPR was started immediately and continued as the lifeboat returned to the station.

Back at the station, the crew transferred the man to the boathouse and continued CPR until the ambulance arrived to continue care. Unfortunately, the man was pronounced dead by a doctor shortly after.

“The Gardaí is investigating a fatal drowning incident that occurred in the Calyso Bay area of ​​Ardmore at approximately 4 pm,” said a Garda spokesman.

“A man, in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene and his remains have been transferred to Cork University Hospital. Investigations are ongoing.”
