GARDAI is investigating death threats issued against a group of young girls after a video of them joking about which friend will test positive for Covid-19 went viral.
It was registered as a series of sports clubs and restaurants that closed in Skerries, north of Co Dublin, following a growing number of Covid-19 cases in the local community.
The video, which was uploaded to the TikTok platform, features seven young women laughing and joking about licking faces and catching Covid-19.
The National Public Health Emergency Team called the video “disappointing,” and NPHET member Dr. Cillian De Gascun warned that everyone should take the virus seriously.
Dr De Gascun said: “If we don’t implement the public health measures that everyone is very familiar with now, if the virus has a chance, it can spread very quickly.
“Obviously we have seen it with large outbreaks in recent weeks and then with the large number of outbreaks within the family environment. So [the video] It’s disappointing “.
‘STUPID THING TO DO’
Speaking exclusively to the Irish Sun, the family of one of the girls involved in the video admitted that the video was “stupid.”
But they attacked the false information that was circulating falsely claiming that the girls organized “a Covid party to see how many people they could infect.”
The relative said: “It was stupid, it was a stupid video to post, it was not for public view.
“They went into town to a Chinese restaurant about two weeks ago.
“The bus driver made sure everyone wore their masks, everything was kosher.
“About a week later, one of the people at his company was told that they had been exposed at work, that they needed to get tested. And they were tested and tested positive.
PEOPLE HAVE ‘THREATENED TO KILL THEM’
“So all the people in the gang also had to be examined. And the video they featured was of the girls fighting each other over who was likely to have it. Because they were waiting for the test results.
“It has been painted now that they had a party to try to spread the virus, but it was not.
“One of the girls tested positive. She is worried about everything, as you would be. Many people have threatened to kill them and there has been abuse of dogs.
“Our family is under attack, the girls are crying, crying all day yesterday and they woke up this morning upset.
“The girls are at the limit of their wits, they are talking about jumping out of windows, they are under so much stress.
“My message would be please be nice to them.
“They have received death threats, this has already been reported to the police.”
Skerries Green Party Councilor Karen Power told how she had contacted the HSE to confirm the official number of confirmed cases in the city “to try to alleviate any fears that people may have.”
While describing the girls’ video as “lack of judgment”, Ms Power also criticized the “inaccurate information shared on social media regarding specific locations, businesses and how the virus can spread.”
She added: “I will say that the video was extremely poor for the girls involved. I understand it was not meant to be shared publicly, but sadly things on social media can take on a life of their own. “
