Gardai fined a group of tourists who had traveled 100 kilometers to Portlaoise to visit “shops and sites” on Tuesday.

Laois officers discovered that the group had traveled to the Rock of Dunamaise despite living so far away.

All attendees were issued notices of fixed fines and asked to return to where they had come from.

On social media, gardai said they generally “love tourists,” but in the middle of a Level Five lockdown this is not the time.

A Garda spokesperson said: “Portlaoise Gardaí was on patrol and found a group that had traveled to the Rock of Dunamaise. They lived approximately 100 kilometers away.

“They had decided to visit shops and sites. We love tourists, but not at the present time. Fixed charge notices are issued.”
