Gardaí stepped in last night to break up a large ‘car rally’ after up to 800 people had gathered at the event in Co Cork.
They said they received a report that hundreds of people had gathered in Eastgate, Little Island in contravention of public health regulations.
Gardaí also said that more than 250 vehicles attended.
In a statement, Gardaí said: “There was very little evidence of social distancing, wearing face covers, or general adherence to public health guidelines.
“The ages of the participants included older men between 30 and 40 years old, some accompanied by young children, but mainly men and women between 20 and 30 years old.
“The participants had traveled from outside the greater Cork area and various parts of Munster.”
A senior Garda inspector described it as “a shameful gathering of people, despite the health advice of the past few days.”
The crowd dispersed shortly after Gardaí’s arrival and there were no incidents of public order.
A man was arrested for what Gardaí called “drunken crimes.”
