The PSNI chief and Garda commissioner have signed the terms of a review of the two forces’ response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Police Chief Simon Byrne and Garda Commissioner Drew Harris met at the Monaghan-Tyrone border earlier, while on patrol.

It comes as the figures show that Gardaí has used special powers 139 times since the start of the coronavirus outbreak.

Gardaí received special powers under the Government’s response to Covid-19 as part of Operation Fanacht.

During the Bank Holiday weekend in May, Gardaí mounted a high-visibility operation with an extensive network of checkpoints with more than 2,000 officers.

This followed the implementation of Operation Fanacht over the previous Easter weekend.

Yesterday, a 17-year-old boy, who was allegedly “traveling across the country” and putting the public at risk, became the first minor to face a court accused of violating the new Covid-19 movement restriction laws.

The boy, who cannot be named because he was a minor, was charged today with three counts of violating the Health (Preservation and Protection and Other Emergency Measures in the Public Interest) Act, 2020.

Members of his family have been infected with the coronavirus, they told the Dublin Children’s Court.
