A Garda driver has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
The driver was arrested Monday morning around 10:30 a.m. after being involved in a car accident on the M3 near Navan.
The driver has now been suspended from service and an internal investigation has been launched.
A Garda spokesperson said: “Gardai in Navan attended the scene of a single vehicle traffic collision on the M3 at approximately 10:30 am, on Monday 11/09/2020.
“The collision involved an official Garda car without identification with an occupant. No person was injured.
“The driver, a member of An Garda Síochána, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant and a criminal investigation into traffic law violations is currently underway.
“An internal discipline investigation has also been launched and An Garda member Síochána has been suspended from his duties.
“As this is an ongoing criminal investigation, An Garda Síochána has no further comment.”
Garda drivers drive high-ranking members of the judiciary, including judges of the Special Criminal Court, the Director of the Public Ministry, and high-level government personnel such as the Taoiseach and the Minister of Justice.
They are also licensed to carry firearms and are armed to protect the people who drive.
The garda was driving a state car, a garda car without a badge at the time.
