His car collided with a pickup truck on Silversprings Hill on the north side of town.

According to sources, the highly regarded officer was socializing with colleagues and friends on Friday night and into the early hours of Saturday.

He decided to drive his car home and the accident happened en route.

It is understood that you were driving on the two-lane side of the road that was going uphill, and your car swerved across the road and into the path of an oncoming truck.

On impact, the truck lost control and ended up on its side.

Emergency services were called and Gardai, paramedics and fire personnel attended.

The driver of the van had to be cut from his vehicle and taken to Cork University Hospital, where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The Garda underwent a roadside breath test that failed. He was arrested at the scene by a sergeant and transferred to the Gurranabraher Garda station.

He was not charged with any crime and a file is being prepared for the Director of the Public Ministry.
