The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (Gsoc) is investigating the circumstances behind a speeding car incident in Co Longford on Monday afternoon that left a garda and another man in hospital.

The two were being treated Monday night at Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore following an incident in the town of Longford shortly after 4 p.m.

Gardaí said they received reports of a vehicle driving erratically and made a stop on Ballinalee Road. When the Gardaí approached the vehicle, the driver did not remain at the scene striking a Garda as the car was driving away.

Longford Garda units involved the vehicle in a managed containment operation, Gardaí said.

The vehicle headed to the Ard Aoibhinn area where it collided with a Garda patrol vehicle. The vehicle left the scene and headed to the Ardnacassa area where it then collided with a wall.

Since then, a 35-year-old man from the Co Cavan area has been rushed to the hospital with what have been described as non-life threatening injuries. The suspect is known to have recently appeared in court in Longford for alleged Covid-19 breaches.

The hospitalized garda has been treated for wrist injuries.

The matter has been referred to Gsoc.
