GANGSTER Robbie Lawlor was allegedly taken to the scene of his murder by a high-ranking member of a well-known crime family, Superior Court heard today.
A judge was also told that two people suspected of being involved in the murder in North Belfast had left the island of Ireland.
The details emerged when one of the men accused of the murder was denied compassionate bond to visit his newborn son.
Lawlor, 36, was shot and killed outside Adrian Holland’s home on Etna Drive in the Ardoyne district on April 4 of last year.
According to police, a gunman left the property and opened fire in broad daylight, shooting the underworld boss in the head and body.
Originally from Dublin, Lawlor had been heavily involved in a bitter feud between rival factions based on Drogheda.
‘MASTERPIECE OF CIRCUMSTANCIAL VAGUETY’
Previous courts were told that he may have traveled to Northern Ireland because he feared he would be targeted as part of a deadly drug dispute.
But his murder had already been charged three weeks earlier at a meeting in a Sligo hotel attended by an international drug lord, it has been alleged.
Neither Holland nor 45-year-old co-defendant Patrick Teer of Thornberry Hill in Belfast are charged with being the gunman.
Instead, they have been charged with murder as part of a joint venture, based on their alleged involvement in the events surrounding the shooting.
While Holland sought temporary release from custody, a defense attorney described the case against him as “a masterpiece of circumstantial imprecision.”
Joe Brolly told the court that his client was at a relative’s home on the day of the murder.
According to the lawyer, the victim was taken to the scene of the shooting by a man who is part of a well-known criminal gang in the Republic.
“He took Mr. Lawlor to the scene. Mr. Lawlor was killed when he got out of (his) car, ”said the lawyer.
That man has been interviewed and released by the police, it was claimed, but his current whereabouts are unknown.
Judge Humphreys denied the request for compassionate bond.
