GAA vs. limited crowds could resume in late July

The Gaelic Games and other team sports, such as soccer in front of limited crowds, could resume in the week beginning July 20, when phase four of the government’s planned reopening of the country begins.

Closed-door sports can be held from the start of the third phase on June 29, but only when participants can comply with social distancing protocols.

Golf and other low-risk sports may return on a limited scale on May 18 when current phase one restrictions are lifted.

Rugby is slated to return later in the fifth phase on August 10 along with other close-contact sports. By that time, mass spectator gatherings are expected to be allowed according to interior and exterior restrictions.

The GAA Management Committee is expected to meet next week to digest the government’s plans. They have the power to change the schedule and structure of the Championship after the Special Congress handed them responsibility last month.

However, the Government warned that one or two phases may have to be stepped back if the easing of restrictions interferes with the fight against the coronavirus outbreak.
