Frank Lampard has called Jurgen Klopp’s criticism of Chelsea spending “funny”.
Chelsea have spent more than £ 200 million on new recruits in a summer of rebuilding Stamford Bridge, but Klopp insisted that Liverpool were different from “clubs that belong to countries and oligarchs.”
Blues manager Lampard believes Klopp was both defending Liverpool’s lack of summer signings as he was overlooking the Reds’ previous recruiting campaigns that have propelled the Anfield club to the top.

“It bothered me less, I found it more, a little funny, I’d say,” Lampard said. “Because I think when you talk about club owners, I don’t think it matters what line of business they come from, we’re talking about some very wealthy club owners in the Premier League.
“I think with the history of Liverpool, and I mentioned it a lot last year, the history of Liverpool, it is a fantastic history of a club for four and a half years, five years that Jurgen Klopp has been there and has achieved that recruiting a really high level.
“And the reality is that probably, apart from Leicester, which is an incredible story, most of the clubs that win the Premier League today have recruited well and recruited at a high level in terms of money. And you can go through the Liverpool players: Van Dijk, Alisson, Fabinho, Keita, Mane, Salah, incredible players, that had a very high price.
“So Liverpool have done it, and they have done it for a period of time. What we’ve done is get out of a ban, we’re probably trying to address the situation ourselves to help improve ourselves.
“So I think it’s normal for the course, and I think we all know that it doesn’t make sense to do too much math because I think we know that Liverpool have spent at a high level, we know they have an incredible coach, we know they have incredible players.
“And I think the really smart thing Liverpool have done is to believe in their coach, to believe in their system for several years. So it’s a great story, but it’s a story where money has been spent on players. And this summer we have spent money on players, and now we have to work hard ”.
Lampard has admitted that he hopes Chelsea’s other rivals will follow Klopp’s lead in criticizing West Londoners’ summer of free spending, but also admitted that it is all part of the Premier League battlefield.
When asked if Chelsea have to accept that their transfer business will attract the attention of their rivals, Lampard continued: “Yes, and those are the rules because maybe I would reference it elsewhere.
“I probably mentioned the transfer ban quite a bit last year, and maybe I felt that was one of the reasons we were 30 points behind the top two teams. And when José Mourinho could mention it, maybe he wouldn’t have done it when he was at Manchester United. These are the rules.
“Sometimes if you have the opportunity to invest in a club, coaches of one of the best, you try to do the best you can.
“I feel like we have done it this summer with a view to bringing in young, highly talented players, I think very talented, of course with the exception of Thiago Silva and his age. But trying to improve the club, and that is part of our plan.
“And my job is to work with that, and my job is not to get too caught up in other people’s comments. Because many managers who work in clubs at this level will spend money.
“And we will be judged by how well we spend the money, how well we train the players we bring in, and we will be judged by the results we get.”
