Dean Smith says he’s disappointed in his Aston Villa’s 1-1 draw at Newcastle, but admitted his team didn’t deserve to win anyway.
Villa thought they had won the game when an own goal from Ciaran Clark put them ahead in the 86th minute. The three points would have seen them overtake Liverpool and enter eight in the table.
Nevertheless, a draw in the 94th minute by Magpies captain Jamaal Lascelles it meant that the points were shared at the end.
That means Villa is ninth, although they still have a game ahead of the champions.
But while blacksmith He insisted that the villains should have held out, he also accepted that they didn’t do enough to win it.
“When you have a goal up with four minutes to go, you are naturally disappointed,” he said.
“We didn’t deserve to win the game in 94 or 95 minutes. I thought it was certainly not a game for purists. A bit of an ugly game. Not many completions and not many clear chances. They probably had the best in all honesty.
“But when he scores a goal in the 90th minute like we did, he must go see it. But to be fair to the guys, I can’t be too harsh on them for most of the season. “
Smith rues wasted opportunities
After taking the lead, Villa also had several opportunities to double his lead as Newcastle desperately searched for a leveler.
But as was typical of the game, and town in general lately, they weren’t ruthless in front of goal.
That didn’t go unnoticed by Smith, who said after the game: “We could have gone and scored a goal to make it 2-0 with the counter-attack opportunities we had.
“Once we scored, they threw everything forward and left holes, and we didn’t take advantage of the opportunities and we allowed them to put the ball in the area and Lascelles got in at the end of one.”
Goal scoring has become a problem for Villa in recent months. They haven’t scored more than once in a game since January and none of their players have found the net in the last three games.
Anwar El Ghazi was the last to do so when he scored the winning goal against Leeds on 27 February.
