Frontline worker who gave first COVID vaccine to Dublin supergran hailed as Ireland’s ‘most caring and hard-working nurse’

History was made today when Annie Lynch, a Liberties grandmother of ten, became the first person to be vaccinated against COVID in Ireland.

Photos of Annie getting the vaccine have been around the world, with news outlets as far away as Australia reporting on the 79-year-old Dubliner and showing photos of her receiving the vaccine.

But little has been said about the other person in the now-viral photo.

The nurse who can be seen administering Annie with the Pfizer / BioNTech injection is Deborah Cross, whose colleagues at St James’s Hospital have been hailed as a “lovely and positive woman.”

“Deborah is the quintessential nurse,” a frontline co-worker at the city center hospital told Dublin Live today.

“Honestly, she really is one of the hardest working people in the entire hospital. She is never afraid of getting stuck and is a brilliant problem solver.”

Kildare’s mother of two has worked at St James’s for nearly 20 years and is highly admired among her colleagues.

CNM 3 (clinical nurse manager) has a “hugely pressurized job” in surgical leadership, but his friends at St. James say it’s a role the popular frontline healthcare professional enjoys.

“Nothing stops her, she really is a police officer,” they continued. “She is everything a nurse should be and is a wonderfully kind and caring person.

“Honestly, she is the hardest working nurse you can hope for, and that has never been more apparent than since the coronavirus pandemic hit.”

The image of Deborah giving Drimnagh great Annie the first blow to a non-front-line worker in the country has made headlines from Sydney in Australia to North Carolina in the United States.

Annie is a true Dub who grew up in the Liberties. Sadly, the mother of three lost her loving husband John earlier this year.

One of her ten grandchildren works at St. James’s and was with her at the historic moment.

Annie later said that she felt “very privileged to be the first person in Ireland to receive the vaccine.”

Beaumont Hospital and St. James’s in Dublin, as well as Cork University Hospital and Galway University Hospital, today began administering the Pfizer BioNTech jab in Ireland.
