Fred Red ruins United’s chances and PSG prevails

Manchester United squandered an opportunity to seal progress to the Champions League knockout stage when Fred was sent off in a loss to last season’s finalist Paris St Germain.

After starting Group H with a 2-1 win in the French capital and a 5-0 beating of RB Leipzig, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side knew they would advance to the round of 16 if they avoided defeat on Wednesday.

United seemed well placed to secure that vital point after Marcus Rashford nullified Neymar’s initial stun, but goals from Marquinhos and Neymar on either side of Fred’s late ejection saw PSG run 3-1 winless. 1 at Old Trafford.

The result means that the top three in Group H are tied on nine points heading into the final matches, and the Red Devils know that a point in Leipzig will see them reach the last 16.

Neymar completed a victory that started in style in the sixth minute, with PSG on top during an opening that saw Fred somehow avoid a red card after shoving his head against Leandro Paredes midway through the first half.

Referee Daniele Orsato only gave a yellow card despite reviewing the decision on the monitor and Rashford soon leveled with an effort that deflected Danilo.

Fred was fortunate to avoid a second yellow card before half-time, from which United came back strong when Martial squandered twice good chances, the second effort after a scandalous chip from Edinson Cavani hit the crossbar.

But PSG would seal a much-needed victory when Marquinhos returned home from close range before Fred finally received his marching orders, although this time he could be considered unfortunate.

Neymar added a third in injury time after United failed in their quest for another draw.
