Four people, including a student from the school, were taken to the hospital after an accident.
The incident, which involved a car and a school bus, took place on Downpatrick Road in Clough, Co Down and was reported around 8.35am this morning.
The bus is known to have been carrying students to St Malachy’s High School in Castlewellan when the accident occurred, Belfast Live reports.
The road was subsequently closed by police and emergency services including the Northern Ireland Air Ambulance charity, paramedics and firefighters were scrambled.
A spokesperson for Translink said: “We can confirm that a bus operating a school service to Castlewellan was involved in a collision with a car near Clough at approximately 8.35am this morning.
“Emergency services were called to the scene.
“Both occupants of the car were taken to the hospital.
“The bus driver was also taken to the hospital as was a student. Initial reports suggest his injuries are not serious.
“We will work with the PSNI in their investigation.”
A PSNI spokesperson said: “Police are currently at the scene of a serious traffic collision on Downpatrick Road in Clough that involved a bus and a car, which occurred shortly before 8:40 am.
“The driver of the car and his male passenger were taken to the hospital. The driver of the bus was also hospitalized.
“Twelve students were on board the bus; two of whom were treated at the scene by paramedics. A third student on the bus was taken from the scene to the hospital for treatment. We believe, at this time, the injuries of the students” a board the bus do not pose a threat to life.
“Our officers remain at the scene on Downpatrick Road, which is closed and will remain closed for some time while we deal with the crash.
“We ask drivers to avoid the area and use an alternate route. We will provide more information as soon as we can.”
The school has been contacted for comment.
