Four prominent academics have submitted their names for the position of rector of Trinity College Dublin.
Professor Linda Doyle, former dean of research; Prof Linda Hogan, former Vice Chancellor; Professor Jane Ohlmeyer, Professor of History and President of the Irish Research Council; and Dr. Sarah Alyn-Stacey, Associate Professor of French, have confirmed to their colleagues that they have applied for the position.
Provost Patrick Prendergast is due to end his 10-year term on July 31, 2021, with Trinity’s next boss taking office the next day.
The identity of any other applicant is unknown as the initial interview process is confidential.
However, the number of high-level academics who have entered the career increases the possibility that Trinity will have its first female president in its 428-year history.
Applications for the office of rector will close at noon on Friday, and initial interviews will take place during December and January.
Electoral campaign
Subsequently, the candidates will be formally nominated and an electoral campaign will begin between February 5 and April 7, and the election will be held on April 10.
Professor Linda Doyle recently resigned from her position as dean of research. She was the founding director of Connect, a Science Foundation Ireland research center, and has played a key role in promoting female participation in the Stem sector.
Professor Linda Hogan, Professor of Ecumenics, served as Vice Chancellor from 2011 to 2016. Her research has focused on areas such as ethics and human rights, and she is a member of the Irish Council for Bioethics.
Professor Jane Ohlmeyer, who was the director of the Long Room Hub until recently, is an expert on the modern history of Ireland and Great Britain and is the Erasmus Smith Professor of Modern History at Trinity.
Dr. Sarah Alyn-Stacey is Associate Professor in Trinity’s French department and Director of the Trinity Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies.
