Four counties in Ireland are increasing towards Level 3 restrictions after a large spike in Covid-19 numbers was reported yesterday.

Cork, Monaghan, Roscommon and Longford have two-week incidence rates above 100, and NPHET is likely to make a decision on whether to upgrade them in the government’s Living with Covid plan early next week.

Dublin and Donegal continue to have a fairly high number of cases and are unlikely to drop to Level 2 at the moment.

Yesterday 613 new cases and 10 more deaths were reported, a significant jump from the previous days.

Acting Medical Director Dr. Ronan Glynn said: “The figures reported today and over the past week represent a significant escalation in the profile of COVID-19 in Ireland.

“For those over the age of 70 and those who are medically vulnerable to COVID-19, it is strongly recommended that they limit the number of people they meet to a very small core group of family members, caregivers or friends, for short periods of time, while he remains physically distant.

“We need to work together once again to make a significant impact on the number of cases in the community and ultimately to reduce the number of people who get sick, enter hospitals and intensive care, while protecting services. non-COVID health care providers. I urge people in all counties to follow public health advice to stop the spread of COVID-19. “

If the Government moved certain counties to Level 4, only essential businesses and services would be allowed to operate.

“The priority at Tier 4 is to keep schools and child care services open, while keeping people safe,” the guidelines state.

“Only businesses and services that are essential will be opened. Visitors to private homes or social gatherings will not be allowed. All businesses and services will be closed, except those deemed essential.”
