Raheem Sterling and Aymeric Laporte have led tributes to former Manchester City youth team player Jeremy Wisten, who died at the age of 17.
Malawi-born defender Wisten played for City’s elite youth teams after joining in 2016, but had recently left his academy.
A club statement read: “The Manchester City family is saddened to learn of the passing of former Academy player Jeremy Wisten.
“We send our deepest condolences to your friends and family. Our thoughts are with you at this difficult time.”
England forward Sterling offered prayers in responding to the announcement on Twitter.
French defender Laporte responded with a blue heart and added: “Horrible news … RIP, young man.”
19-year-old city midfielder Tommy Doyle, who made his Premier League debut in July, wrote on Twitter: “How sad. RIP, my brother” and Cole Palmer, who appeared at the Carabao Cup in September, posted photos of himself (bottom, top right) with Wisten (bottom, top left) on Instagram, writing “You will be missed forever 💔 Fly high my brother 😇❤️ Rest in paradise! 🌟”.
