A former All-Ireland club champion has appeared in court charged in connection with the robbery and attempted robbery of ATMs in Cavan and Monaghan last year.

Daniel O’Callaghan (30) appeared before the Special Criminal Court charged with five crimes related to the robbery of an ATM in Castleblayney, Co Monaghan, in April and the attempted robbery of an ATM in Virginia, Co Cavan, in August .

Garda Detective Jim Matthews of Bailieborough Garda Station said he arrested Mr. O’Callaghan, of Monog Road, Crossmaglen, Co Armagh, on foot of a warrant in Cavan District Court.

Mr. O’Callaghan, who has three Irish Club Championship medals for Crossmaglen Rangers, is charged with offenses under Sections 72 and 73 of the Criminal Justice Act.

State Attorney Michael O’Donovan said he is charged with the attempted robbery of the ATM at The Riverfront Hotel, Main Street, Virginia, Co Cavan, on August 14, 2019, for the benefit of, under the direction of or in association with a criminal organization.

O’Callaghan is also charged with the criminal mischief and robbery of an ATM on Main Street, Castleblayney, Co Monaghan, on April 3, 2019, and both offenses were allegedly for the benefit of, under the direction of or in association with a criminal organization.

He is also charged with participating in or contributing to the possession of cash with the intention of facilitating the commission by a criminal organization or any of its members of a felony in Tullypole, Moynalty, Co Meath, on August 14 and 20.

Defense attorney Seamus Lannon said his client had already been on “fairly strict bail for separate but related matters” since January and had fully complied with all conditions, to which Det Garda Matthews agreed.

A cash bond of 1,000 euros and a separate guarantee of 20,000 euros had already been set, Lannon said.

Chief Justice Judge Tara Burns put O’Callaghan in pretrial detention until Monday.

Four other men, including three brothers from Co Monaghan, have already been charged with participating in the ATM robbery attempts and have been granted bail by the Special Criminal Court.
