Former Fermanagh footballer Shane O’Brien died after a car accident in Pretoria, South Africa, where he lived and worked with the United Nations Refugee Agency.
Club man Erne Gaels was part of Fermanagh’s junior squad that reached an Ulster final in 2003 and was part of the senior organization in 2009 before traveling abroad to work with the United Nations.
“It is with a deep sense of shock and sadness that we learn of Shane O’Brien’s tragic death at the Erne Gaels Club,” read a statement from Fermanagh.
“Shane was a member of the Fermanagh junior team that reached the Ulster final in 2003 and a member of Fermanagh’s senior soccer team in 2009.
“Shane also won a Corn na nÓg title in 1999 with St Michael’s College, Enniskillen and a MacRory Cup in 2002. Our condolences to the O’Brien family at this time.
“At the right hand of God was his soul.”
Former teammate Ryan McCluskey was one of those who offered their condolences on Twitter.
“Another life taken too soon. I had the pleasure of playing alongside this young man. A brilliant gentleman and man. Condolences to Shane’s family and clubmates @ErneGaelsGAC. @FermanaghGAA #Rip #perspective.”
Terribly sad news about Shane O’Brien’s passing. He won a MacRory Cup for St Michaels, played for Fermanagh and then went to work for the UN, making a real difference in the world. Ar dheis de go raibh a anam, Rest in peace Shane.
