A former airport policeman and male model has been jailed for five years for his involvement in money laundering totaling more than 1 million euros.
The Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard that Mark Adams (41) life had been “ruined” by drug and gambling dependence, but he was on a waiting list for treatment when customs officials detained him when I was about to board a flight with more than € 500,000 in hidden cash in 2015.
“If I tell them I’m a dead man, even if I don’t tell them I’m a dead man anyway,” Adams said when asked about the origin of the cash at the airport.
The father of one has no prior convictions and has been detained since March 2020.
Adams, of Castle Heath, Malahide, Dublin, pleaded guilty to participating in the handling of € 582,045 of proceeds from criminal conduct at Dublin Airport on September 11, 2015.
He also pleaded guilty to money laundering in relation to € 227,130 at the Bank of Ireland, Dublin Airport; € 298,280 in PTSB, Main Street Malahide and € 78,990 in Bank of Ireland Credit Card Center on dates between January 2012 and March 2017.

Judge Martin Nolan said that, as an airport cop for 13 years, Adams “knew the ways of the world” and would have had no illusions that he was helping and assisting criminal enterprises.
He noted that Adams had pleaded guilty, admitted and had no criminal record. He took into account that Adams has a work history and is a good father and family man.
“I consider money laundering to be very serious. It is vital for any criminal enterprise to have people to launder money for them and for their own reasons they did, ”Judge Nolan said. He imposed five years in prison.

Judge Nolan said Adams was capable of reforming, so he didn’t think it made sense to suspend part of the mandate. He said the five years would act as a general punishment and deterrent.
The court heard that Adams was a former airport cop who was on a career hiatus when under investigation.
Defender Michael Bowman SC said Adams had been a promising athlete but suffered a career-ending injury at a young age. He developed a dependence on alcohol and cocaine, suffered from depression and mental health problems.
The attorney said Adams needed assistance and support to recover from the addictions that “ruined” his life. He was on a waiting list for a treatment center when he was arrested. Bowman said Adams had not used his position as a former airport cop in his crime.
