Churches will ring their bells, the Air Corps will make a flyover and motorists will be asked to sound their horns to mark National Service Day today.
Seamus O’Neill, chair of the organizing committee for National Services Day, has said that while today’s event is a private ceremony due to Covid-19 restrictions, people can still join in the celebrations.
The usual parade has been canceled, but Justice Minister Helen McEntee will lay a wreath at a socially estranged ceremony in Dublin followed by the replay of The Last Post.
Speaking to RTÉ, O’Neill said that while things have “changed dramatically” this year due to the pandemic, the committee decided to expand the scope of the commemoration and the theme is Remember with dignity.
The Air Corps will fly over Dublin at 3pm and he is “delighted” that churches across the country are ringing their bells at the same time.
Organizers are inviting motorists to honk their car horns, also at 3 pm. They are also encouraging people to come out and clap at the nearest Garda station, fire station or RNLI station in a show of solidarity with frontline workers.
O’Neill said that today is about people remembering together and celebrating together.
He said that no one had come out of Covid-19 unscathed and that without the general public, this virus would be rampant.
“What we are trying to say today is that we are all together. We ask people to celebrate with us and also remember those who have suffered and those who died.”
