Cork City Council has released a statement:
“Cork City Council calls on motorists to avoid the low-lying areas of Cork city center until 11am this morning, Tuesday October 20, due to severe flooding. Traffic is heavy in the city since there are deviations.
“Operations teams from Cork City Council, Cork City Fire Brigade and Cork City Civil Defense are on site to assist as severe flooding has occurred at Lower Docks, Oliver Plunkett Street , South Mall, with waters running up Caroline Street and Winthrop Street.
“Further updates will be posted on Cork City Council Twitter (@corkcitycouncil) and www.corkcity.ie.”
UPDATED 9:15 AM:
Several dock areas in Cork City now have large amounts of water flowing through them. South Mall, Oliver Plunkett Street, and nearby streets have been particularly hard hit.
Most of Oliver Plunkett Street is heavily flooded.
There are reports of water entering the business in South Terrace.
Motorists are advised to avoid the city center until at least 10 a.m. M. From this morning.
In the county, Bantry, Youghal and Kinsale have also been severely affected by the floods.
AA Roadwatch said this morning:
“Severe flooding was reported in the city center and the Cork City Council is advising motorists to avoid the city center until after 10am if possible.
“The emergency services advise not to go through Bantry as the city center is flooded.
“In Kinsale, Pier Rd is impassable due to flooding.
“Back St (R634) is flooded in Youghal and Gardaí asks to avoid the area.
“Whitegate Village (R630) is also flooded, so use alternate routes this morning.
“In Carrigaline, flooding has been reported on several routes around the city, including Crosshaven Rd, Station Rd, and Main St.”
UPDATE 8.50AM:
The city of Cork was hit by flooding in various areas of the city center this morning.
There is a significant amount of water flowing down South Terrace, South Mall, and onto Oliver Plunkett Street.
P. Mathew Quay and Rutland Street are now flooded. Morrison’s Quay and Wandesford Quay have some flooding. Union Quay is flooded but passable at George’s Quay.

Bantry town center is flooded and the local fire department is urging people to avoid traveling to it this morning.
Cork is preparing for potential future floods this morning with a yellow rain warning that also remains in place until 3:00 pm
The Cork City Council and Cork City Council have issued flood warnings in light of heavy rains and the occurrence of very high astronomical spring tides.
Flooding continues to be a risk this morning with high tide at 8.35am.
The City Council has said that flooding is very likely particularly at: Morrison’s Quay; Mathew Quay; Mathew Street; Union Quay; Bridge of the Trinity; South Terrace; Rutland Street; Sawmill Street; Lavitts Quay; Kyrls Street; Kyrls Quay; Green crosses; Sharman Crawford St; and Wandesford Quay.
David Joyce, Director of Operational Services for Cork City Council, said the council was well equipped to handle potential flooding.
“Cork City Council is well prepared to support Cork citizens and businesses during this tidal event.
“We have resources on standby and in conjunction with the other Lead Response Agencies, including the Fire Services, An Garda Síochána and the Civil Defense, we are ready to respond to any issues that arise,” he said.
Motorists are advised not to park in any of the listed areas until after 10 am this morning.
Cork City Council workers have already closed Sharman Crawford St.
There are reports of flooding in South Terrace and Morrison’s Island.
