The Cork City Council has issued a flood warning for tomorrow night, Monday 14 December.
“We wish to warn that there will be a period of very high astronomical spring tides from tomorrow night, Monday, December 14, 2020 until Wednesday, December 16, 2020,” they stated.
High tide is due tomorrow at 5.09 pm, followed by another surge in the early morning and late afternoon on Tuesday and Wednesday.
At-risk locals can pick up gel packs on Mondays and Tuesdays at the council depot and Tramore Valley Park (more details below).
The natural cycle of high tides for the following days is planned for:
Day | Date | Morning high tide | Late high tide |
Monday | 12/14/2020 | N / A | 17:09 |
Tuesday | 12/15/2020 | 05:33 | 17:57 |
Wednesday | 12/16/2020 | 06:21 | 18:43 |
The Monday and Tuesday high tides are predicted to cause only minor localized flooding along the lower piers, i.e .:
- Morrison Pier
- Father Mathew Quay
- P. Mathew Street
- Union Quay
- Trinity bridge
- South Terrace
- Rutland Street
- Sawmill street
- Lavitts Pier
- Kyrls Street
- Kyrls Quay
- Green crosses
- Proby’s Quay
- Sharman Crawford St
- Wandesford Quay.
However, a storm surge and strong winds are currently forecast from the southeast on Wednesday morning. These factors combined with the morning high tide have the potential to cause significant Tidal flood in the city center right now.
In addition to the areas described above, the following locations would also be at risk of flooding:
- Lapps Quay
- McSwiney Quay
- Albert quay
- Kennedy Quay
- French Pier
- Lancaster Quay
- Sullivan Pier
- South Mall and down side streets to Oliver Plunkett St., then Patrick Street, Grand Parade, Washington Street
- Lower Glanmire Road.
