Gardaí in Limerick has closed 35 house parties that had over 30 people in the Castletroy area of Limerick since last Sunday.

It came after they strengthened patrols in the University of Limerick neighborhoods when students returned to the university.

At a meeting of the Joint Vigilance Committee, gardaí made five arrests for crimes of public order and burglary, and issued 30 warnings about antisocial behavior.

UL academic staff have been accompanying Gardaí on his night patrols to emphasize public health guidelines to students, asking them not to gather in large groups or host house parties.

However, in the absence of penal provisions, Superintendent Brian Sugrue of Henry Street in Limerick, who is spearheading the operation, said the Gardaí are limited in what they can do regarding house parties.

Addressing the JPC councilors and TDs, he said anyone with concerns about house parties or other antisocial behavior should contact gardaí.

If we don’t know them, we can’t act, he said.
