Several units of the Co Kildare Fire Service are at the scene of a major fire at the Drehid Bord Na Móna waste management plant near Carbury.
The fire initially broke out on Friday night and was brought under control with the help of the Air Corps fire and helicopter service that was called in to help fight the fire.
However, black smoke was seen coming out of the plant again on Sunday, prompting a new firefighting operation, locals said.
Two units from the Co Kildare fire brigade have entered the Bord Na Móna complex, while two others are stationed on the perimeter as a preventive measure to stop the spread of fire to the hundreds of hectares of swamps in the area.
Drehid’s landfill plant extracts gas from municipal waste and can produce up to 5.6 megawatts of renewable energy, enough to power 8,500 homes.
Drehid is one of the state’s largest landfills in the country, with a capacity of 120,000 tons per year and a composting facility of 25,000 tons per year.
In July 2018, the Kildare Fire Service dealt with a fire at the Bord na Móna Kilberry plant near Athy, which produces horticultural products.
