An owner who had the good sense to use a free ‘Find My Device’ app on his Apple device saw that it came back after a burglary at his home in Cork City after Gardai used it to track down and arrest two suspects.
Shortly before 9 am yesterday, Gardaí from Bridewell Garda Station received a report of a robbery that had occurred overnight at a home on Ard Fallen Terrace, Friar Street.
The injured party informed detectives that electronic devices had been stolen from the home, but that they had installed an app to “find my device.”
Detectives launched an operation using the tracking software and arrested a 40-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman later that night in Cork City.
One tablet was recovered and has since been returned to the owner.
The suspects were taken to Bridewell Garda Station and detained for further questioning.
Gardai in Cork is now advising anyone with an electronic device, smartphone, tablet, laptop, to install and use the Find My Device software and applications.
Garda Crime Prevention Officer Tony Davis said: “It’s great to see that our recent Streetwise campaign could be making a difference in returning property to its rightful owners.
“I’d like to remind anyone with a smartphone or tablet to download a reliable ‘find my device’ app and add an emergency contact number to their phone. In the last 20 months, nearly 11,500 phones have been stolen and only 10% of them are recovered.
“Other preventative measures you can take include enabling PIN security, keeping your device locked at all times, and marking it as property with unique personal letters or numbers.”
“For those of you who don’t own a smartphone, call * # 06 # on your keypad and write down the IMEI number that appears.
“This is a 15-digit number that is unique to your phone. If your phone is lost or stolen, call your service provider immediately so they can lock the phone.
“If you think your phone or tablet has been stolen, you should call Gardaí immediately. Do not follow the person through their tracking app.”
