A file has been sent to the Director of the Public Prosecutor’s Office in relation to the Oireachtas Golf Society dinner last August, which became known as ‘golfgate’.

Gardaí launched an investigation following the August 19 event last year into what it said were “alleged violations” of the Covid-19 temporary restrictions.

The file was completed in the last two weeks and sent to the DPP, who will decide whether criminal charges are preferred.

The investigation was conducted by the Gardaí in Galway and several people who were at the Clifden House Hotel that night were interviewed, including public representatives.

Former Agriculture Minister Dara Calleary and former European Commissioner Phil Hogan attended the dinner and subsequently resigned from their positions.

Six senators from Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael lost the party whip, but have since been reinstated.

Supreme Court Justice Seamus Woulfe also attended the event, but a report from former Supreme Court Chief Justice Susan Denham concluded that he “did not violate any law or knowingly violate any directives” and that it would be “unfair. and disproportionate “to request his resignation.
