Taoiseach Micheal Martin was told that he should retire as party leader for one of his own in a private party meeting.
And Fine Gael leader Leo Varadkar has been told at his own party meeting that the government’s mishandling of the mother-and-baby homes bill was another “time for blacks and tans,” referring to the then-Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan’s plans to commemorate the hated Black and Tan War of Independence British State Forces in January.
Sligo TD Marc McSharry criticized the Fianna Fáil leader for being Leo Varadkar’s “main flag flier” as he threw members of his own party “under the bus” over the latest ‘Leo Leaks’ controversy.
MacSharry said Martin had “dragged the party to 11% in the polls” and mocked its leader when he added, “and you are the problem.”
Three sources confirmed to the Mirror that MacSharry said there was “nothing personal” in his barrage against Martin, where MacSharry also said “if you can’t accept it, then you shouldn’t lead the party.”
He spoke at a lengthy meeting of TD’s Fianna Fáil Parliamentary Party, senators and MEPs on Wednesday evening.
Tánaiste Varadkar was dragged by the opposition this week for leaking confidential documents from the government’s GP contract to a doctor friend.
But Mr. Martin received almost more blows from some of his own party members in an internal meeting, where he was accused of protecting the “holy cow” that is Varadlkar.
The son of party legend Ray MacSharry, a former high-ranking minister and EU commissioner, did not hold back in what was described as a “personal attack” last night.
MacSharry is a known critic of his party leader, but another TD who was on the party’s Zoom call last night said: “He was in particularly bitter shape, he broke Micheál a new one to be honest.”
Another TD told the Mirror there was a “stunned silence” after MacSharry finished “his barnstormer.”
MacSharry was backed in his criticism of leader Martin by another notorious party rebel, TD John McGuinness.
