Fine Gael councilor and former Olympic boxer Kenneth Egan resigned from the match whip after violating public health guidelines earlier this month.
Egan, who claimed a silver medal at the 2008 Olympics, apologized after it emerged that he did not restrict his movements when he returned from a boxing event in Essex in early August.
Under the government’s Covid-19 public health guidelines, people traveling from non-green-listed countries, such as Great Britain, must restrict their movements for 14 days when they arrive in Ireland.
In a statement, Mr Egan said he wanted to “sincerely apologize” for violating the guidelines upon his return to Ireland.
“It just shouldn’t have happened. I made a big mistake and I’m sincerely sorry, ”he said.
Mr. Egan added that to “defeat this pandemic,” everyone must obey public health guidelines.
“Public representatives have an even greater responsibility to do so and I failed in this regard,” he said.
“Consequently, I resign from the Fine Gael whip at South Dublin County Council. “
Egan said he wanted to apologize to everyone, but “the most important thing is to the public and the communities for which I was chosen.”
“The fight against Covid-19 continues. I wish you all the best of success in this ongoing battle, ”he added.
Mr. Egan traveled to the UK on August 9 as part of the training team of Irish professional boxer Eric Donovan, who was competing in a boxing event called “Fight Camp”. He flew home to Ireland on August 15, according to a tweet on his Twitter page.
However, the Irish Independent reported that Mr. Egan traveled to Co Cork on August 22, just seven days later.
Egan has represented the Clondalkin constituency in Dublin South County Council since 2014.
