Ferris backs Munster to defeat Leinster in Pro14 final

Former Ireland and Ulster star Stephen Ferris believes Munster can turn the odds and beat Leinster in Saturday’s Guinness Pro14 final.

Munster are the losers coming into the game and have really struggled as of late against Leo Cullen’s men.

However, Ferris believes there are factors that could shift the tie in Munster’s favor, including the absence of RDS fans as Covid-19 restrictions continue.

Ferris also warned that the sudden return of the Irish international contingent to the Leinster team could upset the harmony within Cullen’s team, while Munster will be eager to see CJ Stander leave with some silverware.

Speaking on Game On, Ferris said: “Leinster has won the last five games against Munster. I was chatting with Alan Quinlan during the week and he told me if it’s six losses in a row, that’s in the history books, it’s never really Done before.

“So that’s an incentive for Leinster, but it’s also an incentive for Munster to not allow that to happen and to get absolutely stuck in Leinster in his own backyard.

“Of course there are no fans there, no one leaving Ballsbridge pubs for RDS, so I think it will surely play in Munster’s favor.

“The teams will be announced tomorrow at lunchtime and there is a lot of expectation around the team selection, especially for Leinster because there have been so many players outside of Ireland and so many who have put in 80 minute performances week after week.

“Someone like Michael Bent, who has played maybe 90% of the Pro14 games, and suddenly Andrew Porter and Tadhg Furlong are getting back into the mix.”

Munster has not claimed a trophy since winning the then Magners League in 2011 and Ferris believes they can end that drought this weekend.

“Leo Cullen is going to have a tough job on his hands to keep everyone happy and you know what? I like Munster for this,” he said.

“They have a really good team, they are playing entertaining rugby and I think that the Damien De Allende and Chris Farrell centering partnership could upset some Leinster players and some Leinster fans.”
