Sweet belief
Bruno Fernandes was pretty good on Tuesday as Manchester United won in Paris. Some of his teammates were certainly better, but the credit is due: his first game as captain was a success.
However, it was not further proof that he is the second coming of a four-time Premier League winner icon or one of the greatest players ever.
This one is for you, BT sport commentator Darren Fletcher.
“He’s the captain, and it could easily be an Eric Cantona or Cristiano Ronaldo, someone who believes in himself who missed a penalty at the weekend and missed a penalty there. But there was only one person who took that penalty there and that was Bruno Fernandes ”.
Deciding not to randomly give up his penalty shooting duties in the middle of a game despite missing one a few days before and having another saved but ordered to be retaken, and scoring 21 in a row before then, is truly amazing. What a player.
Follow the leader
Martin Blackburn of Sun He was equally impressed with Fernandes, also known as Cristiano Cantona.
“Leadership is something that comes naturally to the 67 million pound midfielder, even though he is only 26 years old.”
Because, literally, there has never been a single person who has shown leadership skills before the age of 30. Wait until you see Declan Rice, 21, captaining West Ham.
Bruno stars
The Sun Website so is with this feature:
‘How Real Madrid could line up with Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes and number 1 transfer target Kylian Mbappé next summer’
Fast-forwarding that script, we are told that Real Madrid …
1) Make absolutely no defensive transfers, dropping Ferland Mendy and Dani Carvajal for Marcelo and Nacho.
2) Signing both Fernandes and Paul Pogba from a Manchester United team, presumably happy to sell their only two creative midfielders in a transfer window.
3) Randomly make Marco Asensio a guaranteed first team even though he has started 12 La Liga games since January 2019.
4) Fix Eden Hazard.
That is a busy and definitely viable summer.
Attitude is everything
Why Real would even sign Pogba is a mystery, mind. the Daily mailMartin Samuel describes the Frenchman as someone who “is not prepared to do his best” as an explanation for him to start the game on the bench.
What a strange way to refer to a player who provided the assist to win the match and had been a substitute in the previous game.
But did you make the decision not to start well? Martin Blackburn of Sun writes that ‘there was no attitude on the part of Pogba despite the fact that he only returned to do the bench’. The fact that he doesn’t also point out the lack of “attitude” from his fellow substitutes Donny van de Beek or Daniel James must be just an oversight.
No ney, never
Martin Samuel also brings up Neymar in his match report. Not for being a bit silly, but for ‘really walking away from the play when Rashford scored the goal of United’s goal’.
How dare a PSG striker not back down in the 87th minute to help his teammates avoid Marcus Rashford’s excellent shot from 18 yards?

Express yourself
Sun He appears to be in conflict over whether Chelsea’s draw at home to Europa League champion Sevilla, who beat Barcelona at Camp Nou earlier this month, beat Wolves, Manchester United and Inter Milan in Europe. last season and tied twice with eventual finalists Liverpool in 2017, is it a good result or not.
Spoiler: it was.
Dave Kidd admits that “this would not have been a convincing announcement for an enlarged European Super League.” But he adds that the result ‘will have been welcome’ for Frank Lampard as Chelsea ‘cured their defensive incontinence’ and ‘looked more solid’ so this ‘should be considered a point won rather than two lost’.
But Simon Phillips was unimpressed, suggesting they ‘looked scared’, ‘scared’ and crippled by ‘a lack of faith’ in an ‘awkward’ formation.
‘These players need to lower the pressure and allow themselves to be creative and expressive,’ he concludes about a team whose Premier League results so far this season include two 3-3 draws, 4-0 and 3-1 wins and a 2- 0 defeat.
More creativity and opportunities to be “expressive” is definitely what one of the highest scoring teams in England needs, with their poor defensive record.
Silva lining
There are no prizes for guessing where this headline came from:
‘Frank Lampard praises the’ quality ‘of Thiago Silva for starring as Chelsea shut out Sevilla, but admits that he will have to’ direct it ‘because the body of a 36-year veteran cannot bear to play in every game.
The manager “admits” that he will “coach” one of his players. Whats Next?

the Daily mirror It ignores the two Champions League games with English teams on Tuesday night to focus on Liverpool’s clash with Ajax on Wednesday. This story is at the top of their website at lunchtime:
LET’S GO TO DUTCH! 5 talking points from Liverpool training as the Reds prepare for the trip to Amsterdam to face Ajax in the Champions League ‘
These ‘talking points’, specifically ‘from Liverpool training’, remember, are:
1) Fabinho will play.
2) Joe Gomez will play.
3) Roberto Firmino ‘will have a lot of desire to return to be between the goals’.
4) Nathaniel Phillips should be on the bench because there is literally no one else.
5) Jake Cain simultaneously has “a potential chance” to play and “unlikely to appear.”
