A man in Co Fermanagh was fined £ 1,000 (€ 1,120) for violating quarantine restrictions upon returning from a holiday in Spain.

The sanction is understood to have been issued after the man went out to socialize in Enniskillen at the weekend.

The man, who later tested positive for Covid-19, was supposed to isolate himself after recently returning from Spain’s Balearic Islands.

People returning from countries that are not on Northern Ireland’s green list for safe travel, such as Spain, must be quarantined for two weeks.

Details of the incident in Enniskillen were first reported by the Belfast Telegraph on Thursday.

PSNI Deputy Chief of Police Alan Todd confirmed that the £ 1,000 fine was issued on Tuesday.

“The management of the Health Protection Regulation (Coronavirus, International Travel) (Northern Ireland) 2020, is a matter for the UK Border Force and its associated partners,” he added.

“The role of the police is to respond to reports from the UK Border Force or any of its associated partners about possible infractions, but the police will also act on any significant concerns raised by the public.

“As always, our focus remains on engaging, explaining and encouraging, and only when it is necessary to enforce.

“Everyone must follow the government’s guidance to help suppress the spread of the virus and support our NHS.

“It is encouraging to see that to date there has been a high level of compliance since the introduction of mandatory quarantine for travelers arriving in Northern Ireland from restricted countries and I hope that continues.”
