Fermanagh’s request to the Central Competition Control Committee (CCCC) to postpone Sunday’s league game against Clare at Ennis has failed.
RTÉ Sport confirmed this development tonight with the Fermanagh GAA board. The CCCC met last night and again tonight and decided not to postpone the match.
Erne County has requested a postponement on the grounds that 10 players tested positive for coronavirus and seven other panel members in isolation.
Many of those players will only come out of self-isolation on the morning of Clare’s game.
The County Board will now decide whether to field a team or not, but it is understood that they could produce a team with multiple players under the age of 20 included.
Manager Ryan McMenamin has spoken of his reserves for the game to proceed as scheduled on Sunday.
“We’re open to playing it, but it all comes down to integrity. They told us we can’t meet in the middle because that will ruin the integrity of the game.”
“At the same time, we are told that it is okay for a team to lose 20 players or more, and then expect 10 players who have signed Covid to come out on a Sunday.”
Both counties are struggling to avoid relegation to Division 3 in a match that could have implications for their participation in the All-Ireland soccer championship in 2021, as only those in the first two divisions can enter the playoffs.
Counties playing in Divisions 3 and 4 will participate in the Tailteann Cup, the new competition for so-called “level 2” teams, should they fail to reach a provincial final.
