The Department of Social Protection has put in place special arrangements to quickly pay Pandemic Unemployment Pay to those who will lose their jobs due to the new lockdown restrictions.
Tough new measures were announced this afternoon in response to the new surge in coronavirus infections across the country.
Pubs, restaurants and hair salons will close on Christmas Eve, leaving thousands out of work until at least January 12.
Social Protection Minister Heather Humphreys said that anyone who applies for PUPs up to and including Christmas Eve will receive their payment the following week.
She said: “My priority is to ensure that businesses and workers affected by these new restrictions are supported.
“I want to assure all workers that the Pandemic Unemployment Pay remains open for applications and will be available to help people who lose their jobs in the coming days.
“I have made arrangements for the people who will lose their jobs at this very difficult time and my Department officials will be on duty during the Christmas period so that applications are processed without delay.
“In order to process applications as quickly as possible, I urge everyone to submit their application online. The quickest and easiest way to apply for Pandemic Unemployment Payment is online through MyWelfare.ie. “
Anyone who submits a new payment request in the period between December 18 and the close of business today will receive their payment on December 24.
A new request made before the close of business on Wednesday, December 23, will receive payment on Wednesday, December 30.
A person who submits a new application before the close of business on Thursday, December 24, will receive a payment on Thursday, December 31.
Requests made on any date from December 25 to the close of business on December 31 will be paid on the normal PUP payment date of Tuesday, January 5.
