The FAI has confirmed that Derry City cannot comply with Wednesday night’s game against newly crowned champions Shamrock Rovers and the matter will be referred to the association’s disciplinary committee.

The Brandywell club announced Monday that this week’s game would not continue after a player and a backroom team member tested positive for coronavirus.

The Irish Football Association initially said it is “waiting for more information” before officially postponing the match, but has now issued a statement saying the matter will be referred to its disciplinary committee.

While the committee will determine whether the league game will be altered or a loss imposed, the upcoming Derry FAI Cup quarter-finals against Sligo Rovers have been postponed and a new date will be set.

“Derry City Football Club has confirmed to the Irish Football Association that they are unable to comply with the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division match on Wednesday night at Shamrock Rovers due to positive Covid-19 test results from the players and club staff, “the statement read. .

The club has also informed the FAI that the Northern Ireland Public Health Agency has withdrawn its entire squad and staff from the first team for a period of 14 days of self-isolation, up to and including 6 November, following these positive tests. .

“As a result of this confirmation from Derry City FC, the failure to comply with Wednesday night’s match against Shamrock Rovers will be referred to the FAI disciplinary committee in accordance with FAI rules and the Participation Agreement.

“The quarter-finals of the FAI Extra.ie Cup in Derry City with Sligo Rovers, due to be played at the Showgrounds this Sunday, have been postponed. The FAI will look for possible new dates for this match in due course.”

The Rovers were due to lift the Premier Division trophy at Tallaght Stadium on Wednesday after winning the title without kicking a ball over the weekend.

Last week, the governing body told clubs in the League of Ireland that no further matches would be postponed due to cases of coronavirus.

Wednesday’s game had been initially rescheduled as of October 16 after a positive case of Covid-19 was identified on the Shamrock Rovers team.
