FAI Announces Commitment to Term Limits Ahead of EGM

The FAI has announced that the Government is satisfied that councilors with more than 10 years of service are standing for re-election, ahead of an EGM to confirm a Memorandum of Understanding agreed as part of the 30 million euro bailout of the association.

Most of the money the FAI desperately needs is made up of increased state funding and an interest-free loan.

Therefore, the FAI faces insolvency unless the rule changes agreed upon between the board and the government are adopted on Monday, but the term limits were believed to be a particular sticking point, since they would disqualify a large number of voting council members.

It now appears that a compromise has been reached that allowed those with more than 10 years of experience to get back on their feet provided their terms end in July 2022.

Roy Barrett, president of the FAI, said in a statement that Sports Minister Catherine Martin and Minister of State Jack Chambers “had taken note of the FAI’s proposal regarding a process to withdraw Council members from the FAI “after a briefing with Barrett and the interim CEO. Gary Owens on Friday.

Barrett added: “I am pleased to inform you that given the broader reforms that are taking place and, in particular, the replacement of the Council with the establishment of a broader General Assembly, Ministers are satisfied that Council members with more than 10 years of service be eligible to stand for election to the General Assembly subject to their mandate ending on or before July 31, 2022.

“The Ministers also indicate that term limits will be applied to the members of the new Assembly.”

The statement said that Barrett and Owens had “outlined proposals to go to Monday’s meeting regarding the importance of retaining experienced people with the necessary key skills that will be required over the next 18-24 months when there will be significant changes in the Association.”
