A further 98 cases of coronavirus were confirmed in Ireland tonight, up from 95 on Thursday.

The number of Dublin cases was reduced to 24, while there were 13 in Kildare, eight in Kerry, six in Kilkenny, six in Limerick, six in Louth, five in Tipperary and the remaining 30 cases are in Carlow, Clare, Cork, Galway, Laois, Leitrim, Longford, Meath, Monaghan, Offaly, Waterford and Wexford.

Of the cases reported today;

  • 48 are male / 50 are female
  • 66% are under 45 years of age
  • 42% are confirmed to be associated with outbreaks or are close contacts of a confirmed case, and
  • Nine cases have been identified as community transmission.

Dr. Ronan Glynn, Acting Health Department Medical Director, said: “As we head into another weekend, keep physical distance in mind at all times. Have no more than 6 visitors in your home and keep 2 meters between you. Open windows and keep rooms well ventilated if possible.

“It is important that we all keep our social contacts low as we focus on keeping our schools safe, continuing to resume health care services, and ultimately protecting the most vulnerable from COVID-19.”

There are 17 Covid-19 patients in the hospital, with three in the ICU.

Meanwhile, the government is silent on when Ireland’s “wet bars” will be allowed to reopen.

There has been a big push from tavern keepers to allow pubs without food to open this month and government ministers have said they hope to have a plan soon.

The next decision on the reopening is expected to be made on September 13, when publicans await a specific date.
