Exact Location of Today’s 396 Coronavirus Cases as Dr. Tony Holohan Highlights Concern for a County

Ireland has seen another jump in the number of daily coronavirus cases after 396 were confirmed on Thursday.

Positive trends continue to emerge as the country adjusts to Level Five restrictions.

And while tonight’s figures represented an increase in the number of Covid cases here, health chiefs have said it has not affected the 14-day infection incidence rate.

Professor Philip Nolan, chair of NPHET’s Epidemiological Modeling Advisory Group, said that very significant progress has been made in reducing cases to around 400 per day, compared to 1,200 during the peak a few weeks ago.

However, concerns remain over Co Donegal, with an incidence of 14 days that is more than double that of the rest of the country.

Dr. Tony Holohan, Medical Director, said: “Not all parts of the country have experienced the same reductions in disease incidence.

“For example, the 14-day incidence in Donegal is 281 per 100,000, compared to the national average of 135 per 100,000.

“The country as a whole may be able to reduce this disease to low levels in the coming weeks.

“We have achieved a great suppression during the Tier 5 period, the next few weeks offer us the opportunity to further reduce transmission.”

Professor Philip Nolan added: “We estimate that the reproduction number is now 0.6. The data suggest that Level 3 measures stabilized the number of cases, while Level 5 measures were necessary to suppress transmission, especially when infection rates are high. If we keep up our efforts, we can reduce the infection to very low levels. “
