Ireland saw another large increase in coronavirus cases tonight with another 1205 cases reported.
Professor Philip Nolan, chair of NPHET’s Irish Epidemiological Modeling Advisory Group, warned that “there has been no improvement” to slow the spread of the virus across the country.
Speaking about today’s figures, he said: “The number of reproduction seems to have increased and is now 1.4 nationally.
“The model shows that if current trends continue, by October 31, the number of cases reported daily would be in the range of 1,800 to 2,500 cases with more than 400 people in the hospital.”
Of the cases reported today;
- 614 are men / 590 are women
- 71% are under 45 years old
- The average age is 34 years.
Meanwhile, Medical Director Dr. Tony Holohan warned that “the growth rate of the epidemic has accelerated since the last NPHET meeting.”
He said: “Cases reported in the last week have increased by 82% compared to the previous 7 days, from 3,514 to 6,382 cases.
“The positivity rate in the last 7 days is now 6.2% and continues to increase.”
“The incidence of 14 days in people 65 years of age or older has increased from 92.9 per 100,000 inhabitants on October 7 to 125 per 100,000 inhabitants on October 14.
“The number of hospitalizations is increasing faster than the exponential growth model predicted. This indicates a rapidly deteriorating disease trajectory nationwide. “
He added that it is clear that the disease “is not under control” and added that many other countries in Europe are experiencing a similar situation.
