Today a celebration was held in Carlingford, Co Louth to celebrate Joe Biden’s victory in the United States presidential election.

The socially distanced event was organized by the Irish For Biden Campaign and the locals who were delighted to see Mr. Biden, whose ancestry dates back to the area, claim the historic result.

It included a performance of a new piece of music, ‘Ode to Local Joe’, written by the Carlingford Pipe Band in honor of Biden’s victory.

Louth Fine Gael Senator John McGahon told BreakingNews.ie that locals were “absolutely delighted” that Biden, who visited the area four years ago, will become the 46th president of the United States.

He said there was a “wonderful atmosphere”, adding that it had lifted spirits in the area amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

“It was a great way to express everyone’s joy that Joe Biden won the presidency.

“Even when Joe Biden came here four years ago, his family’s grave is there in one of the cemeteries in North Louth. People are delighted with that. It’s great to have good news in the Covid era we’re in. living.

“The Carlingford Pipe Band is a brilliant group. It is a medieval town and the bagpipe band added a lot to the atmospheric playfulness and sense of occasion.

“Joe’s great-great-grandfather, Owen Finnegan, was born in Templetown on the Cooley Peninsula in 1814. He arrived in New York on May 31, 1849 and was followed over the next year by his wife Jane and their children,” he explained. “It is truly amazing that the president-elect of the great-great-grandfather of the United States left Carlingford Harbor in 1849 and all these years later an ancestor of his was elected to the most powerful office in the world.”

Paul Allen, the organizer of Irish For Biden, previously told BreakingNews.ie that Biden was “blown away” by the Cooley Peninsula during his 2016 visit.

“One of the best moments was when one of the Secret Service agents said to me, ‘where the hell are we?’ As we got out of the car in this kind of boring, narrow place.

“Behind me, Biden yells, ‘We’re in heaven, man!’ He was impressed by the place. “

McGahon revealed that he already wrote to Biden to invite him to return to Co Louth.

He has a real affinity for the area and the local people here have a real affinity for him.

“I actually wrote to the President-elect yesterday inviting him to return to Carlingford. I fully accept what he has on his plate, but it would be really wonderful to have him back in North Louth at some point during his presidency.

“He came here in 2016 when he was vice president and spent more than two days in Louth. He has a real affinity for the area and the local people here have a real affinity for him.

“I wrote that letter and sent it to his campaign email yesterday, it would be great to see him back at some point during his presidency. I wouldn’t expect to see that anytime soon with the pandemic, but it would be great to see him here when the world returns to normal.”

McGahon said that locals were happy to do their part in the Irish For Biden campaign.

“The Irish campaign for Biden was very well run. When you look at Georgia, Wisconsin and Michigan, three key states and there are only about 80,000 votes among those crucial states that gave Joe Biden a win.” The campaign would certainly have played a game role in ensuring that people voted in what was the highest turnout in the history of the US presidential election. “

McGahon also spoke about what a Biden presidency will mean for Ireland.

“For the first time since John F Kennedy, we have a true Irish American in the White House. I know some Irish ancestry can be traced back to most presidents, but JFK was an iconic Irish American president and now we have another Irish American president iconic in the form of Joe Biden.

Ireland

Joe Biden will be the most genuine Irish-American president …

“He is clearly an Irish American, he holds his Irish ancestry and heritage in high esteem and we can see that in the viral video of him telling the BBC reporter, ‘I am Irish.’

Brexi

“I think it will be great to have a president with such strong ties to Ireland, especially as we enter the Brexit negotiations. I have no doubt now that the White House is behind us and will ensure that the spirit of the Good Friday Agreement is upheld in every stage of the Brexit negotiations.

“He is a true friend of Ireland.”
