Eoghan McDermott: Chances of RTE anchor replacing 2FM star lowered

RTÉ radio host Carl Mullan has seen his chances of replacing Eoghan McDermott on 2FM reduced.

Earlier this week, word spread that McDermott was hanging up the mic for personal reasons.

The 37-year-old man’s surprising decision came after he took an unplanned annual vacation two weeks ago.

He had been hosting RTÉ 2FM’s breakfast show alongside Doireann Garrihy.

Since joining the national broadcaster Spin FM in 2014, McDermott has hosted several shows on television and radio.

Since taking the annual vacation, he has not been on the air and is now ready to retire from the Breakfast Show he co-hosted for the past two years.

And now it looks like the announcer might have found his replacement.

The Irish Daily Star learned during the week that Carl might be the next in line to join Doireann in the mornings.

And now the odds of him replacing Eoghan have dropped, according to the sportsbooks.

BoyleSports has trimmed the RTE Player series host ‘Go Outside’ to 5/1 from 1/25 to work alongside Doireann.

Marty Guilfoyle remains the 3/1 favorite to replace Eoghan on the breakfast show, should his departure from 2FM be confirmed.

SPIN1038 and Spin South West DJ previously hosted The Zoo Crew with Doireann and listeners loved the chemistry the pair had.

Carl has been providing coverage shifts at the station when the presenters are on annual vacation, while also hosting the Weekend Breakfast with Aifric O’Connell.

Sarah Kinsella, BoyleSports spokesperson said: “The growing rumors that Eoghan McDermott is preparing to walk away from the Breakfast Show that he has hosted alongside Doireann Garrihy for the past two years has resulted in a new name being linked to replace him.

“Doireann’s former colleague from Spin 1038 Marty Guilfoyle is 3/1 out of 10/1 to jump ship and join RTE 2FM, but Carl Mullan is the most moving to 5/1 from 25/1 after a strong I support Sunday morning. “
