Seainin Mahon, the boyfriend who led Envoi Allen before his 11 wins for Gordon Elliott, couldn’t be at Cheltenham on Thursday to care for the superstar when he fell during his debut with Henry de Bromhead in the Marsh Rookie Chase.
Mahon was expected to lead Envoi Allen one last time in Cheltenham, but Covid-19 protocols meant that getting to the Cotswolds became a difficult journey and he decided to stay home.
She explained: “I was supposed to go but, with the way things worked with Covid protocols, there is a limited number of staff going to Cheltenham this year.
“I didn’t have another horse going there and it would have been unfair for me to take the place of another staff member who did have a horse. Unfortunately, that’s the way it worked this year.”
Before the race, Mahon said he had little doubt that Envoi Allen would clinch a third victory at the Cheltenham Festival, but that he only wished the Cheveley Park-owned star would return safely.

She added: “As long as he comes home in one piece, I will be happy. I have no doubt that he will win. Obviously I am devastated, I will not be there, but I will be cheering him home all the way.” .

‘El Tigre gave us the push we needed’
Cullentra House Stables may no longer be the home of Envoi Allen, but Tiger Roll did his bit to lift spirits on the patio when he recorded his fifth festival win by running wildly in the cross-country chase Wednesday.
