Earliest dates Irish pubs, restaurants and barber shops can reopen with another hammer blow

Haircuts and pints are firmly “off the table until midsummer.”

This means that the whole country will not be able to have a pint in a bar, or have a professional cut or comb your hair for at least nine more weeks.

It is believed that May 24 may be the next date that could see the return of hairdressers, but sources emphasize that even this distant date is completely dependent on the Covid case and vaccination figures between now and then.

Bars and restaurants are expected to remain closed until at least mid-June, or possibly longer.

The government is ready to decide what restrictions, if any, could be relaxed starting April 5 at a cabinet meeting next Tuesday.

Prior to this, NPHET medical experts will give a high-risk presentation to government leaders on Monday night.

But it is already accepted that the return of personal services, which includes hairdressers and interior hospitality, will not be recommended by NPHET, so it will not be considered by the Cabinet.

A senior government source told the Irish Mirror when asked about haircuts and paint: “I’m afraid they are not on the table for now, until midsummer.”

He added: “They are not in the running for next Tuesday’s announcement.”

Meanwhile, the Taoiseach has said that no decisions have been made regarding the restrictions that will be eased from April 5.

Micheal Martin warned that the situation regarding the virus was “very fragile.”

Mr Martin told the Dail: “The situation regarding the virus is very fragile.

“We have, in the last seven days, 3,800 cases.

“The sacrifices that people have made have had an impact on the drastic reduction of the case numbers from the January figures.

“The Level 5 restrictions have worked effectively to bring the numbers down very, very significantly from where they were.

“But the numbers are still high in one sense as well, and the rationale is that we are dealing with a variant that is highly transmissible and more dangerous.

“No decision has been made regarding the post-April 5 situation.

“We have engaged in public health research and advice in relation to this.”
