It’s going to be an absolutely terrible night in Dublin with Met Eireann issuing a flood and hurricane-force warning for the capital.

Status A yellow wind advisory was issued for Leinster, Clare, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford this morning and forecasters have now added that there is a great possibility of flooding in coastal areas.

The wind warning predicts gusts of up to 100 km / h and this is likely to cause flooding around high tide at 12:15 am.

The warning, which remains in place until 9am tomorrow, reads: It will be very windy tonight and Wednesday morning.

“Strong and gusty winds from the southeast, veering southwest with gusts of up to 100 km / h.

“Due to the high seas and strong winds on land, there is a high risk of coastal flooding.”

Meteorological experts say that southeastern winds gradually drifting from south to southwest will increase to gales or strong gales tonight over Irish coastal waters from Malin Head to Hook Head to Slyne Head and into the Irish Sea.

Met Eireann issued an updated forecast for Dublin shortly after 4pm this afternoon that also predicts a swath of rain that will pose a risk of surface flooding.

They said: “It will be humid and windy tonight. Clouds will rise overnight with a band of rain that will cross the area early in the evening, bringing the risk of surface flooding.

“Southeasterly winds will increase from strong to almost gale and gusty. Winds will develop along the coast creating a risk of coastal flooding.”

“Later in the evening, the rain will clear up and turn into scattered thunderstorms. The lowest temperatures of 4 to 6 ° C will occur early in the evening.”

The wet and windy weather will continue until tomorrow morning.

The forecaster added: “Wednesday will start wet and windy. Strong to near gales and gusty southeast winds will drift south to southwest during the afternoon and gradually ease.

“It will remain mostly cloudy with scattered heavy rains that will merge with longer periods of rain at times. Higher temperatures of 9-11 ° C.”
