A Dublin teenager was shocked when a sinkhole gave way beneath him as he walked home from school.
High school student Paul Gannon, 16, was returning from Gaelscoil Colaiste Mhuire in North Dublin when the ground opened and his leg went straight in down to the knee.
The incident occurred around 4:20 p.m. Wednesday, right outside his home, on the quiet cul-de-sac of St Mary’s Avenue North, Dublin 7.
Paul’s mother, Wendy Gannon, told Dublin Live: “He noticed what looked like a small crack in the ground, but as he passed over it his leg went through it.
“It just appeared out of nowhere. I live on a real residential avenue, there are about 50 children. It could have been a lot more serious if a smaller child had fallen into it.”
Ms. Gannon said the hole was “quite big, bigger than the normal plate.”
Locals said the area previously had tenement homes with basements, which may have been the case that the ground gave way.
“The soil was not very thick over the hole,” Gannon said.
“It was really shocking that all the neighbors saw it.”
She confirmed that Dublin City Council covered the hole with a metal plate and sealed it with asphalt shortly thereafter.
