A Dublin couple due to marry in Co Meath this Saturday have said “ambiguity” remains as to whether their wedding will be allowed to continue.
Mark Callanan and Ann Murphy from West Dublin were originally due to tie the knot in July but have postponed the event for this weekend, reducing the number from 120 to 50 (including on-site staff).
The couple got engaged in July 2018 and live just over a mile from the Dublin-Meath border.
Dublin remains at Level 2, along with the rest of the State, on the Government’s five-point Covid-19 scale, but additional restrictions have been announced and the expectation is that the county may move to Level 3 in the coming days.
Weddings of up to 50 people are allowed under Level 2 of the Government’s Living with Covid Plan, which is reduced to 25 people below Level 3.
Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe told RTE’s Morning Ireland on Wednesday that people living in Dublin who are considering vacationing elsewhere in the state should reschedule and those in the county who plan to have or attend weddings outside of the capital should reconsider this.
“Our concern now, as of this morning, is that Paschal Donohoe at Morning Ireland has come out and said that people should not travel for weddings outside of Dublin, giving us 72 hours notice that we need to make a decision. But the advice is still just encouraging people not to leave Dublin, ”Callanan told The Irish Times on Wednesday.
“We are also waiting for tomorrow’s decision from NPHET [National Public Health Emergency Team] and there is talk of whether Dublin will be Level 3 or not … It really has been a roller coaster ride. Yesterday we were over the moon, then we were in anguish. We are up and down.
Leo Varadkar in primetime last night was asked a very similar question and he rejected it and then Paschal gives a different answer, so we are hearing different things from different members of the government.
“This time [IN]72 hours we should be at our wedding ceremony, but even this time [IN]It is likely that in 24 hours we will not know if that is happening. ”
Ms. Murphy said that along with other couples “they just want clarity.” “We just wish that if they were going to put us on a Level Three that they would do it on Tuesday, we just do whatever it takes and we will take it and follow what is asked of us at the time, but don’t do it. don’t do it on Tuesday, but then threaten her on Thursday and maybe next week, ”she said.
The couple said their ceremony and beverage reception will be held outdoors and that dinner will be held in a room that seats 180 people.
“We have both been working from home for the past six months. We have not let our children meet other people. We have locked ourselves in the house for the past two weeks just to keep ourselves safe and not put our guests at risk. We have simply followed each of the things that have been asked of us, ”added Ms. Murphy.
